The Armory Art Show, NYC, 2026
Stepping onto the floor of the Javits Center for this year’s Armory Show, you don’t get that familiar, soul-crushing wave of sterile corporate monotony. Moving the whole circus to late September seems to have given everyone—the dealers, the curators, the tired-footed viewers—a much-needed second wind. There are many new galleries participating but there also seems to be missing the bigger more established spaces. This gives opportunity to new spaces, artists, locations and collectors at much more affordable prices.
The real beating heart of the show sits right in the Focus section, where raw textile and assemblage works quietly steal the scene from more conventional commercial fare.
CURATORIAL HIGHLIGHTS & SPECIAL SECTIONS
Focus: The Caribbean and Its Diasporas
Curated by María Elena Ortiz (Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth), the Focus section centres on artists operating across the Caribbean Sea and its global diasporas. Through solo and dual-artist presentations, featured artists include Gio Swaby, Kachelle Knowles, Renée Cox, and Lizania Cruz.
Platform: Large-Scale Public Sculptures & Installations
Curated by Jovanna Venegas (SculptureCenter), Platform explores themes of resilience, reconstruction, and technology across the Americas and the Caribbean. Monumental works and spatial interventions are featured from artists including Bony Ramirez, Curtis Talwst Santiago, Lucia Hierro, Rafael Domenech, María Magdalena Campos-Pons, Hew Locke, and Margarita Cabrera.
Expanded Solo & Presents Sections
Driven by strong international demand, both the Solo (single-artist booths) and Presents (young galleries under 10 years old) sections have expanded by over 20%:
- Solo (~25 Exhibitors): Key single-artist presentations include Ayako Rokkaku, Betsabeé Romero, José Bechara, and Henry Glavin.
- Presents (~55 Exhibitors): Highlights emerging talents with newcomers such as Circle Art Gallery, Galerie Noah Klink, Rajiv Menon Contemporary, and Yiwei Gallery joining returning stalwarts including Hesse Flatow, The Pit, and 56 Henry.
INSTITUTIONAL PARTNERSHIPS & PRIZES
- Armory Spotlight: El Museo del Barrio has been selected for the 2026 Armory Spotlight, receiving a complimentary booth to showcase textile artist Lulu Varona, who will engage visitors in an interactive, participatory work throughout the fair.
- Gramercy International Prize: Awarded to New York gallery Margot Samel, granting a complimentary stand dedicated to a two-person presentation of Leroy Johnson and Sasha Brodsky.
- Museum Acquisition Prizes: In 2026, the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) and the Bronx Museum will acquire works directly from the Focus and Presents sections, respectively, reinforcing institutional support for living artists.
