This week is ABMB + Miami Art Week, art and design fanatics will travel to Miami to attend Art Basel Miami and Design Miami. The annual art week has grown into so much more than these two important fairs alone. The city will be immersed in art activations, installations, performances, talks, book signings, exhibitions, and nearly 2 dozen satellite art fairs. With such an overwhelming number of events, preparation and planning are key. I am here to point out some off-site activations for this week’s art week.
Kehinde Wiley and Swiss Beatz – Creative Minds talk
Miami Art Week Benefit
Monday the 2nd of December the renown artist Kehinde Wiley and music producer and art collector Swizz Beatz will discuss philanthropy, modern-day activism, and how to make it in the art world. The two artists joined to kick off the week in Miami in support of Black Rock, the artist residency in Senegal launched by Wiley.
ICA Miami opening exhibition Tuesday, Dec 3rd
ICA presents a major survey of the Dutch-American artist Sterling Ruby, alongside exhibitions by Wong Ping, Augustin Fernandez, and Carlos Sandoval de Leon, as well as a newly commissioned sculpture by Damien Ortega. The exhibitions will be opening on Tuesday the 3rd of December.
Every year, the Miami Design District commissions artists to create the neighborhood installations during Art Basel Miami. This year, the neighborhood will present an installation by the Mexican designer Fernando Laposse. The installation consists of tassels hanging from the trees, navigating the audience to identify the pink hairy sloths hanging in the trees and arches. The installation includes ten sculptural hammocks created in collaboration with designer Angela Damman.
Mickalene Thomas at The Bass Museum
Wednesday, December 4th, The Bass Museum will present the opening of ‘Mickalene Thomas: Better Nights’ and the opening of ‘Laura Favaretto: Blind Spot.’
‘Mickalene Thomas: Better Nights’ is an immersive installation created out of a conceptual reconstructed apartment environment including faux wood paneling, wallpaper, custom seating reunited with the artist’s signature textiles. The installation presents both artworks by the artist as well as artworks by emerging and established artists of color selected by Thomas.
The exhibition will include live performances, concerts, and activations.
Audemars Piguet Presents Jana Winderen
Audemars Piguet presents a sound installation by Jana Winderen. The installation is an extension of Winderen’s research on human-created sound. The work investigates the sound of the ocean and the impact of human sounds underwater. You can experience the installation at Collins Park on Wednesday from 10 am to 10 pm.
Faena Festival: Last Supper
Faena Festival explores spirituality and food. From December 2nd to December 8, the festival will present performances, exhibitions, installation, activations, artist talks, videos, and commissions by the artists: Sophia Al-Maria, Janine Antoni, Yael Bartana, Andrea Büttner, Myrlande Constant, Gabriel Chaile, Jim Denevan, Camille Henrot, Zhang Huan, The Propeller Group, Christian Jankowski, Lunafridge, Jumana Manna, Jillian Mayer, Ana Mendieta, Pedro Neves Marques, Emeka Ogboh, Grethell Rasúa, Martha Rosler, Faith Ringgold, Jamilah Sabur, Osías Yanov in collaboration with Lulo Demarco, and Antonia Wright.
Vanessa Beecroft Performance
Vanessa Beecroft’s performance curated by Neville Wakefield explores the Kappa Omni Logo in celebration of its 50th anniversary. The performance will take place on December 5th from 5:30 to 8:00 PM at the Lot 11 Skate park (invitation only).
10 year anniversary of Wynwood Arts District
Wynwood Walls, known to bring together the greatest graffiti and mural artists together at the warehouse district, Wynwood.
Jessica Goldman, CEO of Goldman Properties, curated the roster of global emerging and established artists to create new murals for the Wynwood Walls. Participating artists are: Futura, Kenny Scarf, Ernesto Maranga, Martha Cooper, Mina Hamada, Kesel Montague, Michael Vasquez, Dan Kitchener, Faile, Tats Crew, Hush, and Dasic Fernandez.
Leandro Erlich: ‘Order of Importance’
The city of Miami beach commissioned Leandro Erlich to create his largest public installation to date titled ‘Order of Importance.’
The installation will be on view till December 15 on Lincoln Road beachfront.
‘Extreme Presents’
Jeffrey Deitch and Larry Gagosian will present the fifth of their themed exhibition in the Moore Building in the Miami Design District. The exhibition will be up from December 3rd to December 8th.
‘Conversations With Nature’ Curated by Albie Alexander
Presented in partnership with Swire Properties,‘Conversations With Nature’ pays homage to mother earth through multidisciplinary art installations and activations. The open-air exhibition comprises installations, sound activations, and poetry. Taking over the Brickell City center, the exhibition demands the visitor to explore their connection and relationship with nature.

The Rubell Museum Debute
The Rubell Family Collection moved to its new campus, opening on December 4th. Now named The Tubell Museum occupies a 100,000 square foot space in the new art neighborhood of Allapattah. The inaugural exhibition will present 50 years of contemporary art, comprising over 300 artworks of 100 artists.
