Navigating the Art World: A Masterclass with Robin Cembalest at ArtTable

As an arts writer and editor, my Friday evenings are often spent gallery hopping, keeping a finger on the pulse of the contemporary scene to discover compelling new shows. It was during one of these vibrant opening nights years ago that I first crossed paths with Robin Cembalest. After being introduced through a mutual friend, I quickly realized that running into Robin wasn’t just a pleasant coincidence—it was an education. The more we spoke, the more I grew to admire her profound dedication to mentoring and educating artists as they navigate the notoriously difficult terrain of contemporary art.

Long before she became a digital editorial powerhouse, Cembalest began her career as a fact-checker at Artforum. Her professional journey subsequently took her to Latin America, where she traveled and worked as a journalist for international publications like El País. She often notes that traveling with a journalist’s mindset makes her feel safer and more respected as a visitor—a brilliant piece of advice that I have since adopted in my own travels. Upon returning to New York, she joined ARTnews, eventually climbing the ranks to serve as its Executive Editor for sixteen years, during which she skillfully shepherded the century-old publication into the digital era.

Today, Cembalest has masterfully translated her traditional media expertise into the digital landscape. Described by Artnet as “one of the leading lights of art-world social media,” she uses her Instagram feed (@rcembalest) to serve as both a vibrant chronicle of the art world and a powerful tool for advocacy. On opening nights, she photographs artists standing proudly next to their work. In an industry where immediate exposure on opening day is critical, this kind of organic visibility is invaluable for emerging talent.

Beyond social media, she channels her passion for education into her consulting business, Robin Cembalest Editorial Strategies, which helps museums, foundations, and individual artists design mission-based content. She also founded and directs the Niboristas, a mentoring and networking group for young art-world professionals.

I was reminded of her enduring impact just a few weeks ago when I attended her professional development talk hosted by ArtTable—a premier national organization dedicated to advancing leadership and expanding career opportunities for women and nonbinary professionals in the visual arts. True to form, her presentation was packed with actionable wisdom. She spoke candidly about her own career reinventions, urging attendees to embrace risk, communicate accessibly, and transition from traditional gatekeepers into active “gate-openers.”

If you are looking to learn from her insights firsthand, Robin is hosting two upcoming workshops, Instagram for Art Professionals. The first one on Thursday, July 16th, has already sold out, so she added a second workshop on July 23 from 1-2 pm. You can secure your tickets through this link—and given her track record for delivering indispensable industry wisdom, it is an investment well worth making.

In an era where the boundaries between traditional journalism and digital media are constantly shifting, Robin Cembalest remains a vital compass. For artists and cultural workers alike, her guidance provides more than just a way to survive the art world—she teaches us how to meaningfully connect within it.
