As Art Basel Hong Kong 2025 approaches, the city is poised to reaffirm its status as a pivotal hub in the global art market. From March 28 to 30, the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre will host 240 galleries from 42 countries, including 23 first-time participants, showcasing a rich tapestry of artistic expressions that underscore the fair’s commitment to both global diversity and regional representation.

A highlight of this year’s fair is the Encounters sector, curated by Alexie Glass-Kantor. Titled “As the World Turns,” this segment features 18 large-scale installations that delve into themes of cultural resonance, resilience, and storytelling. Notable works include “Lanternfly Ballet” by Monster Chetwynd, a dynamic piece that intertwines mythology and contemporary narratives, and “DOKU the Creator” by Lu Yang, an interactive digital installation that contemplates the art ecosystem within a highly technologized society.

The Film program, curated for the first time by Hong Kong’s independent art institution Para Site, promises to be another standout feature. With seven screenings featuring works by 30 artists, the program aims to offer fresh perspectives on contemporary issues through the cinematic lens. Collaborations with cultural video channel Nowness Asia and Videotage, a leading non-profit organization dedicated to video art, further enrich the fair’s multidisciplinary approach.

Emerging artists are set to make a significant impact in the Discoveries sector. Artists like Zhu Tian, presenting “A Long Defeat,” and Ernie Wang, with his installation “You! Wanderer!…I know what you are,” challenge societal norms and explore themes of identity and aspiration. These thought-provoking works invite visitors to engage deeply with the evolving narratives shaping contemporary art.

Beyond the fairgrounds, Hong Kong’s vibrant gallery scene offers additional exhibitions that art enthusiasts should not miss. White Cube presents “The Seventies,” a solo exhibition of Lynne Drexler’s work, marking her first solo show in Asia. Meanwhile, Empty Gallery’s immersive, pitch-black space provides a unique setting for experimental art experiences that challenge traditional perceptions.

Art Basel Hong Kong 2025 promises a multifaceted exploration of contemporary art, offering visitors an opportunity to immerse themselves in a diverse array of works that reflect the current pulse of the global art scene.
