The Shah Garg Foundation is currently presenting “Making Their Mark,” an extraordinary exhibition featuring the works of over 80 pioneering women artists spanning eight decades. Curated by Cecilia Alemani, Director & Chief Curator of High Line Art and curator of the 59th International Art Exhibition at the Venice Biennale, this exhibition marks the inaugural public unveiling of the Shah Garg Collection—a groundbreaking assembly of artworks by women, meticulously collected by Komal Shah and Gaurav Garg.

“Making Their Mark” showcases both historical masterpieces and contemporary creations by renowned artists such as Jennifer Bartlett, Lynda Benglis, Firelei Báez, Cecily Brown, Judy Chicago, Sonia Gomes, Sheila Hicks, Jacqueline Humphries, Mary Heilmann, Charline von Heyl, Joan Mitchell, Julie Mehretu, Elizabeth Murray, Howardena Pindell, Jaune Quick-to-See Smith, Joan Semmel, Joan Snyder, Amy Sillman, Mary Weatherford, and Anicka Yi, among others. The exhibition will be hosted at 548 West 22nd Street, the esteemed former residence of Dia Chelsea, from November 2, 2023, to March 23, 2024, and admission will be free to the public.

“Making Their Mark” celebrates the lives and contributions of women artists, illuminating their intergenerational connections, artistic breakthroughs, and enduring impact. Through a diverse array of mediums—including drawings, mixed media, paintings, sculptures, and textiles—the artists redefine art history through their unique and iconic practices.

Crucially, “Making Their Mark” introduces audiences to the overarching mission of the Shah Garg Foundation, which advocates for women artists from the modern era to the present day. By fostering broader perspectives and addressing the systemic biases faced by marginalized artists, the foundation aims to cultivate a more equitable future for the arts. This exhibition serves as the foundation’s inaugural step in sharing its curatorial vision with the public.

Following its New York debut, “Making Their Mark” will travel to the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive in October 2024, and subsequently to the Kemper Art Museum in St. Louis in September 2025.

This landmark exhibition follows the publication of “Making Their Mark: Art by Women in the Shah Garg Collection” in May 2023. Co-edited by Mark Godfrey and Katy Siegel, the book delves into the visionary scope and remarkable achievements of women artists featured in the Shah Garg Collection.
