Thierry Goldberg is pleased to present The Flying Patterns of DJ Soul, Francisco G. Pinzón Samper’s first in-person solo exhibition with the gallery, following his online solo exhibition this summer ‘De la mano al zodiac.’ The exhibition runs from November 18th through December 23rd, 2021.
The Flying Patterns of DJ Soul, a poem composed by Pinzón Samper, serves as a metaphor for his process. Relishing in serendipity, Pinzón Samper uses mediums that are raw and readily available. He glides from piece to piece indiscriminately sampling inspiration from the world around him. The resulting body of work achieves an approachable visual milieu of community, connection, and identity.
Pinzón Samper’s portraits, often drawn of loved ones and friends, convey a deep sense of intimacy. He renders each of his portraits unique, constructing a narrative around his subjects through an amalgamation of color and form. Frequently, his figures appear frozen in time, as if they have been caught in a moment, their gaze acknowledging the viewer’s presence and beckoning an exchange. In some instances, these exchanges are tender, welcoming, and playful such as in l’élan (Andreas) (2021). In others, such as Nina (2021), they feel invasive and imposing. Through these interchanges, Pinzón Samper subtly unveils the essence of his characters creating environments brimming with first impressions and chance encounters.
In Chloe and Nina (2021) a couple lounges comfortably in bed. Snapshots of memories surround the figures providing context for their seemingly peaceful domestic bliss. He utilizes signifiers, such as rumbled bed sheets and entangled limbs to communicate the closeness of the couple’s union. The figures exude an unabashed openness, their lackadaisical glances providing the consent to voyeurism.
Pinzón Samper’s work oscillates among personal, wistful, and spiritual relationships. His figures come across vivacious, their disparate personalities transcribed through body positioning, hand gestures, and broad splashes of color. The work, as a whole, is magnetic; it pulls the viewer into Pinzón Samper’s orbit emanating the rich connection he fosters with his surrounding environment.
Francisco G. Pinzón Samper (b. 1997, Bogota, Colombia) lives and works in Paris, France. He is currently studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, France. Pinzón Samper’s work has been exhibited with Delphian Gallery, London, UK and with galerie l’inlassable, Paris, France.
