DOHA — Art Basel has announced the debut of a new fair in Qatar, set to take place from February 5 to 7, 2026, at the M7 creative hub in Doha’s Design District, with Preview Days on February 3 and 4. Distinct from its previous iterations in Basel, Miami Beach, and Hong Kong, Art Basel Qatar will introduce a conceptual departure from the standard booth model, offering a new format that emphasizes curatorial depth and regional dialogue. The fair aims to foster deeper engagement with galleries and artists from the Middle East, North Africa, South Asia, and beyond.

Accompanying this launch is the appointment of Egyptian-born artist Wael Shawky as Artistic Director for the inaugural edition. Shawky, known for his multidisciplinary practice and narrative-driven works, will shape the fair’s curatorial framework alongside Art Basel’s Chief Artistic Officer and Global Director of Fairs, Vincenzo de Bellis. In a statement from Art Basel, Shawky is described as bringing “deep regional insight and a multidisciplinary approach that aligns with the fair’s ambitions,” including its educational partnership with Qatar Museums’ Fire Station.

Art Basel Qatar will center on a thematic exhibition rather than traditional gallery booths. Solo presentations by galleries will respond to a curatorial concept defined by Art Basel’s leadership. The exhibition will unfold across M7, the Doha Design District, and selected public spaces in Msheireb, transforming the city into an open-air site for critical artistic dialogue. De Bellis described the initiative as “pushing the boundaries of the art fair model,” noting the shift toward deeper storytelling and curatorial resonance.

The inaugural edition will explore the theme “Becoming,” focusing on transformation and the evolving systems that shape human experience. According to the fair’s organizers, the Gulf region—where oral traditions intersect with digital networks—will serve as a living metaphor. “Art becomes a vital conduit, translating systemic shifts into form,” the fair stated, positioning the region as both subject and participant in broader global conversations around identity and cultural production.

Shawky, who recently represented Egypt at the 60th Venice Biennale with his acclaimed video work Drama 1882, expressed enthusiasm for the role. “The opportunity to explore artistic practices from across the MENA region and beyond, within a framework that values research, narrative, and experimentation, is extremely meaningful to me,” he said. His work has been exhibited internationally at the Tate Modern, MoMA PS1, the Serpentine, and Documenta, among others. In 2024, he was also appointed Artistic Director of the Doha Fire Station, where he launched the Arts Intensive Study Program (AISP) to support emerging artists.

The Selection Committee for Art Basel Qatar 2026 will include influential voices from the international gallery scene: Lorenzo Fiaschi (Galleria Continua), Shireen Gandhy (Chemould Prescott Road), Daniela Gareh (White Cube), Mohammed Hafiz (Athr Gallery), Sunny Rahbar (The Third Line), and Gordon VeneKlasen (Michael Werner Gallery). This diverse lineup suggests that while the fair will center on the region, it will remain globally oriented in scope and ambition.
