MOCA North Miami Reveals 2024 Art On The Plaza Featured Artists, Miami (News)

Art On The Plaza Artists: Yanira Collado, Christopher Mitchell, and Nicole Salcedo

The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami (MOCA), is excited to announce the 2024 Art On The Plaza Artists: Yanira Collado, Christopher Mitchell, and Nicole Salcedo. This annual program started in 2020, allows South Florida artists to showcase site-specific, temporary public art installations on MOCA’s front plaza.

Chana Sheldon, MOCA Executive Director, expressed the museum’s commitment to supporting local artists and community engagement through programs like Art on the Plaza. The three installations will be displayed sequentially throughout the year, exploring themes like cultural identity, mythology, nature, and transformation.

Artists are selected through proposals reviewed by a committee. This year, three artists were chosen for personalized support over four months. Yanira Collado’s wind-propelled pinwheels symbolize joy and spirituality, focusing on African Diaspora themes. Christopher Mitchell’s photographic series, Haitian Mermaids, features life-sized mermaids in Kanaval-style costumes. Nicole Salcedo’s Earth Gate, inspired by Caribbean-style gates, represents a transformative threshold, emphasizing interconnectedness with nature.

The installations will be unveiled on March 13, June 26, and September 18, offering diverse artistic experiences for visitors. MOCA Curator Adeze Wilford expressed excitement about the artists drawing on their cultural heritage and creating imaginative, transformative connections for viewers.
