“Bedazzled” exhibited at the Lehman College Art Gallery, is more than eye candy after the first glance. The moment you step into the hall; technique, aesthetics, improvisation and flavor are to be experienced, when you treat your eyes with these alluring pieces.
Make no mistake that these pieces are beyond the 4th dimension. I am not going to mince my words, as there is little that is average about any piece. These are definitely over the top pieces, but quite beyond their respective three-dimensional spaces, which can even be noted in some of the 2D art on display. The glare, the shine, and the futurism with an embellishment of surrealism are filled with attitude and finesse while breaking the mold – quite literally.

Curated carefully by Bartholomew F. Bland with specificity in mind, these pieces will provide plenty of food for thought, as you ponder on their creativity and marvel at their imaginative dare. Susie Macmurray’s Pandora is definitely something that will make you think for a long time, not only based on the title, but how she illustrates the idea of bullets into a box. Then there is Paul Villinski’s Your Name, coupling butterflies into an immaculate invention of art and wonder.

Although each piece invited an alternate or a cult-like approach to embrace them, Michelle Sakhai’s Getaway, Drifting, Always and Edify was rather a subtle and deeper voice in the sense that it had the rather classic route to magnify the perception tangling the reception of the viewer. Choice of colors reciprocated the titles and it gathered its own secret chemistry, not only in each of the four pieces, but they also drew some symmetry within their own theme.
The show is quite an assortment because you feel the strength of opinion each artist caters and secures in his/her own conception; while they visualized each piece converting it into a tangible reality. Abstract, figurative and highly opinionated- each artwork exemplifies strong emotion depicted in contemporary feel.
For me it was a definitive milestone in my visual memory- it has expanded in terms of virtuosity that I will now expect from artists and art. And I am sure it’s never going to elasticize back to where it was before.
“Bedazzled” is on display now at Lehman College Art Gallery until January 4, 2017.
