Stepping off the train at Grand Street on the Lower East Side, one is hit with an instant burst of energy. Action in every direction. That activity amplifies when turning onto Orchard Street, the home of the Van Der Plas Gallery.
Upon entering into the gallery, an overwhelming spirit of vigor impacts the viewer as they approach the large, highly chromatic pieces of Jason Mclean and Noah Becker. Mclean’s “Bend” illustrates a pulsating map of beautiful pandemonium, forcing the audience to contemplate life as the non-objective qualities of the piece allow for freedom in interpretation. Hanging adjacent to Mclean’s piece, Noah Becker’s “Self Portrait” grasps your attention with its Basquiat qualities and a self-portrait that consumes most of the painting.
With “Self Portrait,” Becker puts his own steady yet considerate features on full display while utilizing Basquiat’s imagery not necessarily as a backdrop, but as a source of illumination.
The high energy continues with the futuristic and technologically brilliant interactive works by Erin KO. With the use of the specifically created application “eKo ART”, the already magnificent aluminum pieces are enhanced with a digital layer that not only creates an engaging and exciting experience, but also helps convey her message and perspective on technology.
The “Summer Salon 2015” is Van Der Plas’ largest group show as the director of the gallery, Adriaan Van Der Plas, has carefully chosen and curated the works of thirty-eight distinguished artist. Ranging from portraits to non-objective pieces, Van Der Plas Gallery successfully attracts and appeals to all types of art aficionados and visitors. With magnificent artists like Anders Knutsson, Michael Anderson, Jason Mclean and Debra Drexler, one will not be disappointed by the wide spectrum of brilliant artworks on display.
