* AF Editor Note: Deukyun “Sunny” Hwang took pictures for AF in the summer of 2012 till spring 2013. She is also a visual artist in her own right concentrating on film making and finishing her studies to become the next Sofia Coppola or  Spielberg. Recently, she went to South Korea and said wanted to share the art scene over there. Without further delay, here’s how they mix it up – Gangnam Style!

Who knew that a match up can be made with art and music in an establishment called Home & Tones (equivalent to Benjamin Moore paint)? Well, this can be called Home & Tunes, too.

The novelty or interesting part of it was that each painting had an accompanying music composed by a musical director, In this sense, you can say the painting sang out to the viewer. This is their collaboration called “Mixing Art”. Adrian Yoon is the artist and musical director Sooyoung Kim scored per piece.

It is s unique experience to go around to view and listen to the music enhance the experience as a spectator. The title First Encounter fits the show as each frame is a new encounter alongside the music that such experience is not only a symphony of colors and also a movement of feelings.

The Gangnam area in Seoul, South Korea is rich with talent such as the case with Yoon and Kim. Adrian Yoon is a self-taught painter with a total experience of 20 years producing colorful and vibrant visual gems. Sooyoung Kim composes music for Korean movies – some on his resume include The Fetal Encounter, Miss Granny, and other films. Together they mixed their talents very well into a harmonious tone – very much like the paint colors surrounding the show.

Though it is a paint store, the building offers space for artists to have exhibitions. Yoon wants to convey that he did not go for formal training in the craft of art but followed his passion to be an artist. Kim also was creative in putting speakers into paint bottles so people can use them as headphones.

Color is very essential in art. You use color to visually make your work appealing. For a composer the notes in the melody color each movement. There are many ways to express color in both genres but the perfect mix is a rare chance. I had a great chance to see this show that is mixed very well.
