Matthias Bitzer for his first New York solo exhibition in both the uptown and Chelsea gallery spaces of Marianne Boesky has certainly executed the perfect coup de grace. AF came to the Chelsea space last Match 27th for the opening of Saturnine Swing. His drawings, paintings and sculptures epitomized cerebral proofs in theme and the geometric mastery of the rhizome shape. It was best exemplified in the sculpture that featured the mentioned shape and its open framework provided a dynamic dialogue where viewer configured the moving scenes as people walked past it. The artist presented a unique body of constructed work that created a pendulous wave of consciously referenced items from history and literature that is challenging yet compelling to behold. Art can certainly mean a lot of things but the viewer can just simply let go of the rhetoric and just enjoy it at face value. Throw your cares away and be fancy free – like riding a swing so high in the breezy summer sky!
