Every dog has his day and last September 19th it was David Mitchell who howled and got our sights piqued with his latest show – The Dog Must Howl. The large scale C-Print photographs dominated the space at Jim Kempner Fine Art and with this kind of art that it’s definitely suited for the big dogs. The color fields of squares layered on top of one another evoked a Mark Rothko like quality if he was a maximalist. The proliferation of such colors and forms boosted up the interior but the photograph itself is a delightful pastiche of hues that may bark for your attention but it won’t bite your eye off from color overload. It just hit the sweet spot as far as we’re concerned. When asked what his process was, the artist simply barked with a smile then said, “I am not telling.” Well, the secret may be nuzzled in silence but the artwork howls for sheer appreciation. So sit, good doggy, sit and howl all you want! Because the artwork is bitchin’!
