NLE Curatorial Lab – 12 Week Program for Emerging Curators September 2nd – November 30th, 2013

flyer_webApplication deadline: August 9th, 2013

NLE Curatorial Lab will give emerging curators both the theoretical, practical and supportive experience of curating a site-specific, public art exhibition starting in September 2013.

Through a twelve-week program, emerging curators will be introduced to a socially responsive method of curatorial practice in non institutional settings.  Participants in the NLE Curatorial Lab program will emerge with the tools to conduct community research and engagement, be sensitive and adept at working with artists and support staff to stage a site-specific exhibition with public programming.  Emphasis will be placed on creating an accessible, educative and welcoming experience for visitors to these non-traditional art sites. Curatorial guidance will be provided by Director of New York City’s Percent for Art Program Sara Reisman and Chief Curator Manon Slome, as well as other established guest professionals.

The program will guide participants through six distinct phases:

1) Fundamentals of curating;

2) Historical and community based research;

3) Development of exhibition themes and selection of artists;

4) Creation and installation of the exhibition with all the supplementary materials;

5) Running the exhibition and public programming and

6) Evaluation and impact assessment

The primary aspect for selection is an academic background in contemporary arts or related disciplines with preference given to candidates with either postgraduate qualifications or prior curatorial experience. Selected curators should be in a strong position to make an enthusiastic commitment with both the research and practical environments. A prospective student may substitute academic records with equivalent work experience within an Institution, or with projects developed as an independent curator. Participants are required to spend a minimum of 20 hours a week devoted to the program. A specific schedule will be determined with lead curator and accepted participants at the start of the program.

The program fee is $750 and is limited to three participants.
