continuum (noun) 1: A coherent whole characterized as a collection, sequence, or progression of values or elements varying by minute degrees.*
This sounds like Greek to me or a lengthy Algebra equation that I need to find the value of X. Obviously, I detested the following subjects in high school like mathematics, physics, statistics – anything with an “ics” on it gave me the “icks”! But somehow Rodolfo Edwards’ current show with the title Continuum is esoteric, pandemic and downright fantastic – the kind of words that end in “ic” of the good kind. Last April 17th, AF came to The Gallery Space at Wagner to bear witness and take in the new works by this Chilean architect and visual artist.
I first encountered the multimedia work of Edwards last year in a dual show on the Lower East Side. The precision of the lines and array of created pattern denoted a sense of order and structure. It was no surprise to discover that he is an architect. His previous series left a distinct impression and I was intrigued what he’d do next.
We fast forward to last Wednesday and his collage married with the sharp painting technique showed a new variant on what Edwards does best. His sense of creating impressions of an urban landscape is very distinct but it has taken on a more biomorphic form and the organic tumble and jumble of shapes, color and images develop with a sense of urgency. Gone are the orderly lines that seem to shoot off the four planes of his previous oeuvre. Now it is the amorphous central compositions that grow out of the canvas and ready to encroach upon the surface – pretty much what cities do and the current global speed of urban development. It is both fascinating and intriguing to study as you observe and digest the works Edwards has presented.
There are shades of the architect there with the graph paper grid lines on the background. You can take the boy out of his architectural sense to create this new series but you can never take the architect out of the boy. Edwards will continue to have a unique representation of urban landscapes, which defies time and space in this plane. Art is after all in a perpetual state of creation and so the artist in Edwards must continually move in the forward direction.
