Fedele Spadafora: New Paintings
Slag Contemporary, Bushwick
56 Bogart Street
Exhibition Date: March 22-April 20, 2013
Slag Contemporary is proud to announce the opening of Fedele Spadafora: New Paintings, an exhibition of 14 recent works on canvas on view from March 22 to April 20, 2013.
In starkly contrasting imagery, alternately abstract and figurative, Spadafora explores memory and impressions set in the post-revolutionary societies of Tunisia (2010) and the Czech Republic (1989), where monumental moments in world history have been observed by the American artist firsthand. Drawing upon his experiences, coupled with imagination, Spadafora fills his canvases with vivid colors and designs that evoke references to the transformative works of Paul Klee in Tunisia, along with heavier and darker atmospheres calling to mind the graphic works of Bruno Schultz. By blending tradition and modernity Spadafora tells the tale of two unique places that have long been considered crossroads of civilization.
Fedele Spadafora is currently based in New York City. Having earned a BFA from Michigan State University in his native Lansing, Spadafora headed to Prague, which was just shaking off 45 years of communist groupthink. He spent six exciting years there, painting and co-founding an alternative publishing company, Twisted Spoon Press.
