I stopped by Friday night to check out the opening for Brown Black White at a _____ space, which is an arts studio during the weekdays, a popup gallery on the weekends, and an auction house on Monday evenings. Founder and Curator Mike De’Shazer explains: We pick a talented local artist with a unique vision once every two weeks; we provide them with space and all the materials they need; we shoot video of them creating works in the space; finally, we host an opening at the end of the two weeks, with an auction of the works the following Monday. Each show builds off of the next, and the space is a evolving conversation between artists in the Lower East Side from show to show. I’m more of a facilitator than a curator in the sense that the selected artists get full creative control of all aspects of the show once selected, and I act merely as an advocate, critic, and patron once they take over the space. It’s a lot of fun! And you never know what’s going to happen. I’m extremely excited about the incoming artists this week.

Francesca Padron & her work, “Dots”

Francesca Padron is a Dadaist who believes that life’s greatest moments happen when one stops thinking about life and allows it to take its natural course and evolve organically. Growing up in a free spirited environment, Francesca was always encouraged to express her individuality and creativity. Her strong design background has influenced her creative process and development; all incorporated and built into her work.

    “K”, by Frank Carin

Frank Carino is a photographer and over all free spirit who practices a non-traditional use of photochemistry to create his “chemigrams”. As a professional photo printer, Frank has access to a surplus of expired photo paper and chemicals that he recycles and uses as the platform for his artwork. With his fascination of the physical manifestation of erosion, his work becomes more then chemicals and exposure to the elements on light sensitive paper. They become landscapes from an aerial view: a landslide, flood, sandstone leaching off of a riverbed, or water damage to a concrete wall.
