James Kalm was out on a night time recon tour surveying the Chelsea art district, noting the damages and recovery from Hurricane Sandy when he glanced through the windows at Paul Kasmin’s gallery. “Still Life” the latest group of photos by David LaChapelle was being installed and readied for his opening. The strange remnants of wax figures and fractured faces of pop stars and politicians stuck in his head, and impelled him to make a return trip for the opening. These photos were taken at wax museums in Ireland, California and Nevada and documents some of the pieces that were damaged by vandals. This selection of “portraits” presents a sensitive and ironic view of celebrity and its brittle fragility.
