Adam Mars “The New Ex’s”

[imagebrowser id=101] Through his meticulously crafted paintings and works on paper, Mars creates seductive portraits that respond to our fascination with sex, voyeurism, and pop culture. His subjects resemble their source material (cell phone pics, amateur porn, and personal photos), but fuse elements of Baroque painting and digital crispness to offer a fresh take on the familiar nude. And by opting not to showcase his subjects’ faces, Mars engages our curiosity and causes us to address our own physical identities and erotic preferences.

Born in Orange County in 1981, Mars earned a BFA from UC Santa Barbara in 2003 and an MFA from OTIS College of Art and Design in 2007. Since then, his work has been featured in publications like Juxtapoz Magazine and displayed throughout California at various institutions, including the Laguna Art Museum and Cal State Long Beach. Mars also works with the underground art collectives STATION and LEAF while producing work for a dedicated group of collectors from his Los Angeles-based studio. This is the artist’s first solo show at Orchard Windows Gallery and his New York debut.
