In the little church that would on West 36th Street, MCCNY (Metropolitan Community Church of New York) will be celebrating 40 years of serving the LGBT population of this city. To go along with the festivities, last January 11,, 2012 they had an opening reception for a group art exhibition held at the Jackson Hall gallery of the center. Proceeds from art sales will benefit the Homeless Youth Program and Sylvia Rivera Food Pantry of MCCNY.
The artists in the group show are: Denise Poon, Avril Rondon, Eric Ginsburg, Edward Pietrowski, JAVA, Heidi Russell, Francis Legge, Frankie Brown, Meg Azzoni, Louella Jones, Jonathan Fritz, Peter Rpbinson-Smith, Po, Tim Wearne, Stephanie Jornov, and Tracy Von Becker.
Several artists were able to talk to Arte Fuse during the opening. Jorge Valdes aka Java has work in mosaic, abstract style paintings & found object sculptures. He is an ardent crafter of things that can be recycled into art and putting his passion into creating. Tracy Von Becker had her collection of mixed media art that are gilded and with her fanciful signature touch. She has been involved with MCCNY and their gallery for a good number of years. Francis Legge provided 3-D glasses to view his art photography. It is his first time to join the group show and showing his art in such a setting is such a privilege for him. Jonathan Fritz with his graphic style and outlined art gives love to the dogs and the city flavor. Aside from this show, he has a future charity benefit in the works. Denise Poon also a neophyte in the group show is a design student turned artist and her various art pieces are rooted more in design aesthetics. She thinks it’s awesome to have the opportunity to show but also do good at the same time via the sales that can help support the center’s programs.
The world of art has always been subjected to the headlines of million-dollar sales at auctions and the enigmatic glamour it keeps within its circle. Attending such charity minded events where an art show can actually be a catalyst for good gives this an entirely different picture. And that is – art with a heart!
