If I could distill this artist statement down to a few words it would be this, “Jack Berkowitz likes to draw pictures of people.” And he loves to do it on paper, the larger the better. I’ve been making drawings and paintings for nearly 50 years. Almost all of them have been of people, mostly those that I know some that I don’t and often of myself. After all this time I continue to be fascinated with use of line, light and shadow as a way to describe the people and events that are central to who I am.
The drawings in this show are intentionally un-framed. Paper is a natural material with a unique look and texture. These drawings are meant to be seen and touched. These images are shown with all the imperfections common to this medium, including creases and tears.
