What does it look like to begin/continue challenging the power of a legacy in ways that shift racism from an intentional socio-ethnic process to a historically outdated mode of operation?  This way highlights both the systemic and the personal nature of racism; or, the system within the individual.  It also allows for historical, theological, and pragmatic approaches of oppression, opposition (grace, acceptance, personhood, etc.), and experiential diversity.

Introduction

The Denver Arts & Venues Public Art Program seeks to commission an original musical composition for Denver’s City and County Building Chime. The composition can be up to 3 minutes long, which should be designed to be segmented into shorter sections of approximately 20 and 5 seconds, to be used independently. The compositions will be composed for, and played on, the City and County Building’s 10-bell chime, with the corresponding  notes of: C, D, E, F, G, A, B, B flat, C, and D. The composition will act as a signature piece for Denver; something that will be memorable to identify Denver to residents and visitors. The composition should be celebratory in nature (e.g., uplifting, lively, positive: evoking the spirit of Denver). The longer composition will announce important events that take place in the City and County Building and adjacent Civic Center Park. The shorter segments will temporarily replace the Westminster Chimes that ring throughout the day, on the hour (20 seconds) and quarter hour (5 seconds) on significant and special days for the City of Denver. Completion date for the project is August 2016. The new composition will premier as part of a public event celebrating the City and County Building Chime.
