Opening night for M.O. (Modus Operandi) Exhibition at Ground Arts curated by Kelly Worman
Opening for M.O. (Modus Operandi), a group exhibition featuring three artists of different disciplines whose work is heavily process driven . Annell Livingston, Steven Peters, and Erik Patton were chosen as winners from the Summer 2012 Competition, by juror and New York Arts Magazine executive editor Jason Stopa. Each artist’s process is multilayered, exploring construction and deconstruction, while being guided by the openness and limitations of medium.
Annell Livingston’s paintings are driven by process and place. Annell deconstructs her surroundings, fragments them, rearranges, and then reconstructs using the grid to simulate her environment. Her work reflects each city in which she has lived and each studio in which she has worked. These paintings both pull the viewer in and push them out, acting as a three dimensional and flat surface simultaneously.
Steven Peters’ ceramic sculptures celebrate the expressive, spontaneous, fluid, and awkward qualities of clay as a medium. Embracing of clay’s fragility, intuition and chance are pushing forces in Steven’s process, combining random elements until they have a lingering feeling of necessity.
Erik Patton’s multimedia works investigate the performance and construction of sexuality and gender. Erik constructs 3D collages, by projecting images onto his friends, who then react and respond to the projections as a sort of performance in process. He then photographs the 3D collage, and further manipulates the photograph, creating a vision of metasexuals whose identities are not constrained by contemporary gender or sexual identity preconceptions.
