Artist, Vincent Zambrano with Gallerist, Mike Weiss

“If the dream is a translation of waking life, waking life is also a translation of the dream.” Over 70 years later this quote from Rene Magritte, now more appropriately translated into ones and zeros, reflects the visionary idea Vincent Zambrano and Kaliptus present in their recent works at Orchard Windows gallery in BINARY DREAMS. This collection of artwork, equally reflective, cohesive and futuristic, puts computer-influenced work center stage, as these two artists collaborate and reach to new techniques beyond the paintbrush to express personal visions and dreams.

Among the multi-media artwork, Zambrano, who studied Fine Arts at the Fashion Institute of Technology and film directing at SVA, presents over-sized QR Codes framed by bold colored geometry which he created on canvas using challenging dye ink-printing techniques.  Scanning these technology-abstract paintings with a smartphone instantly connects to his website or shows additional paintings and animation on Youtube for an “out of gallery” experience.

Kaliptus, a NY/NJ graduate from SVA with background in animation and computer art, manipulates outdoor images using glitch photography to produce dreamlike compositions. Using a smartphone to produce mirrored effects, he converts the jpeg file to txt, randomly deletes some of the code, and then converts back to jpeg.  Images with unpredictable distortions of color and composition result, making the artist’s role less conscious and deliberate, similar to the automatic drawing concept of early Surrealists.

Video pieces by both artists present their obvious overlap of identity and self-expression.  While Kaliptus began working in video and animation early in his art career and now paints more frequently, Zambrano started with oil painting and has turned to filmmaking in the past years.  Both artists show autobiographical imagery in black and white for a high-tech surreal quality.

Kaliptus’ work “Abandonment of the Senses” focuses on his stationary floating image meditating, while juxtaposed by a constant flow of letters and symbols moving quickly upscreen. The artist describes this creative video loop as depicting technology as a dream world “symbolizing the matrix of language or source of all language… the center of all-ness when meditating.”

Kaliptus & Zambrano’s short film “Morpheus” shows the dying of dreams in three stages, as he explains, “the dream within a dream… eventually destroys itself”.  On screen, the artist moves from studio to bedroom in an emotionally disoriented manner; each stage becoming more difficult to discern as the imagery breaks up and is eventually enveloped in the emptiness of white. This film is the centerpiece for Zambrano’s multi-media artwork, showing his dual vision of filmmaker and visual artist by carefully designing sets for the filmed scenes which are also exhibited as single frame paintings boldly printed onto silk.

The conceptual audio by Kaliptus accompanies both videos simultaneously, using pedals and synthesizers to connect the separate screens through unique sounds.

”Binary Dreams” combines technology and intuition with art works having a complimentary duality, like the two artists themselves. Both artists agree to having been inspired by each other for this exhibition and jokingly refer to an Ouroboros – the serpent biting its own tail, representing self-reflectance, something constantly recreating itself. While technology may be an addition for dreams or perhaps someday replaced by the dream App, these two multi-media artists have created a unique and intriguing collection of work, which will open your smartphone and your mind to new visions.
