Group Exhibition – “Born 4 Porn” Curated by Derrick B. Harden
Derrick B. Harden is pleased to introduce the next chapter of his curatorial journey in the art world. “Born 4 Porn” is a one week show about the constant manipulation of society in a consumer driven culture.
In 1954 French author Anne Desclos published the “Story of O” under the pen name of Pauline Reage. “The Story of O” is about love, dominance and female submission. The main character, O, is beautiful Parisian fashion photographer who is blindfolded, chained, whipped, branded, pierced, made to wear a mask, and taught to be constantly available for oral, vaginal, and anal intercourse. Despite her harsh treatment, O grants permission beforehand for everything that occurs, and her permission is consistently sought.
The consumer culture we live in is as equally invasive as the saga of “O.” Whatever the medium, TV, cinema, radio, Internet, etc., consumers are constantly bombarded and violated by the sales pitch, yet somehow, society keeps asking for more! “Born 4 Porn” takes a stark look at how our consumer driven society boils everything down to the base desire of sex. The old adage “sex sells” has never been so pervasive in society as it is today. Each artist in “Born 4 Porn” was asked to create a piece of artwork using the “Story of O” as a point of departure. The eleven artists in “Born 4 Porn” have created a unique, if not exploitive, commentary on how society is simply “O.” No matter how humiliating it is to submit to the sales pitch, permission is
constantly granted with a smile.
