This Must Be the Place is pleased to present a solo exhibition of photographs by Julia Gillard. “Greetings from Florida” is a group of 36 digital C-prints created in late 2011 in the cities and towns along Florida’s eastern coast, from Palm Beach to Key Largo. It is the artist’s first solo show in New York.
Julia Gillard’s work records life on the sidewalks, streets, and parking lots across America. Previous series of her work have centered on holidays and gatherings, the places in which we come together. Interested in place as protagonist, Gillard here uses Florida – with its swamps, mosquitoes, storms and stucco, its retirement communities, tanned bodies and relentless sun – as a lively and fickle character. She shoots 35mm film and scans her negatives, making a print from this digital file on traditional photographic paper in editions of five.
The photographs collected in “Greetings from Florida” are unplanned and unposed. As the artist travels, she notices, and she captures; not only is there no smiling for the camera, but there’s no hiding from it. While many of the photos are humorous, they are not made at the expense of their subjects. The people, as well as the landscapes, found in her frames are full of bravado and intimacy. Gillard’s America is one full of beauty and disappointment among the palms of the sunshine state.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Born in 1977, Julia Gillard is a graduate of the International Center of Photography’s Photojournalism and Documentary Photography Program. Her work has appeared in Mother Jones, New York magazine, and The New York Times, and has been exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum; The New York Historical Society; Powerhouse Arena, Brooklyn; Galleri Lundh Åstrand, Stockholm; and the International Center of Photography, New York. Gillard lives in Brooklyn.
