They say a picture paints a thousand words and Paolo Pellizzari was eloquent in realizing that statement with his landscape photos at an opening reception last June 12, 2012. Arte Fuse attended this show at Anastasia Photo on Orchard Street, which specializes in documentary photography and photojournalism. For every show, Anastasia Photo chooses a philanthropic organization. They selected to support The International News Safety Institute for this photo exhibition.
Pellizzari showcased selections of landscape photos from his series “The Broad Way”. Each panoramic shot is film photography and hundreds or at times thousands of frames had to be taken before getting that one arresting scene. Pellizzari captures real moments and eschews the digital route. The entire body of work rests on showing authentic life scenes occurring and capturing it on film for eternity. It evokes a painterly composition where the human element becomes integral in the landscape itself.
On one of my favorite images ”Belgian Damme Skating on the Canal, 2010” it appeared to be an iconic Currier & Ives Christmas Card print or in his own words, a Flemish painting. It does resemble the tonal quality and visual composition of Pieter Bruegel the Elder, who was a Flemish Renaissance painter known for his landscapes. You might say that it’s Photoshop magic but the Italian born photographer really waits for such scenes even if it takes every 5 to 6 years when the canal freezes over to become this vast ice rink slicing through the village. In another image “Italy Torino Olympic Games Gold Medalist Han Xiapeng, 2006” where high speed action dictates the thousand frames fired away to just get that money shot. The misty wintry gray scene had this punctuated element of the red snow suited athlete in mid-flight. It makes all that frames used pay off with a great action shot that is coursing with energy.
Pellizzari is a master storyteller with his camera lens trained on everyday scenes and each landscape photo is astounding because it is not about the wide vistas or the grand expanse of nature. It magnifies an otherwise mundane moment populated by people into a transcendent window to a magical realm. Fleeting moments and amusing details are locked in a story that never ends while the picture is viewed by fascinated eyes. The human factor remains the richest story ever told and Pellizzari conveys it with the mettle of a best selling author.
