Reading a Good Book is More than Fundamental
“Every man who knows how to read has it in his power to magnify himself, to multiply the way in which he exists, to make his life full, significant and interesting.” – Aldous Huxley
On June 21st, Arte Fuse attended a special event at a local business on the lower east side. Lost Weekend NYC in collaboration with Housing Works NYC has launched One | Good | Book. It is a guest curated collection of books that represents the edgier vibe of the neighborhood done by an NYC resident and all proceeds from the book sales will go to Housing Works.
The featured collection will be at the store for a whole month. Emmy Award nominated filmmaker Ian Rosenberg (Welcome to Kushner’s: The Last Catskills Resort) presented his literary choices from Haruki Murakami, Kazuo Ishiguro to Richard Price. It is mainly typified by scandal, sex and danger – as is the character of the LES. Michael Little, the proprietor of Lost Weekend NYC, has discussed with Rosenberg in casual conversation about quintessential books to be read by a Lower Eastsider and the need for a bookstore in the area where it expresses the local flavor. Nicholas Watson, Director of Online Sales at Housing Works Bookstore Cafe, was on hand to answer any questions about the books made available to the endeavor and also their work combating HIV/AIDS in New York for the past three decades. Collection books were priced at $23 and up to $60 for rare edition signed copies.
Housing Works has thrift shops all around the city and a bookstore cafe at 126 Crosby Street in Soho. 100% of the proceeds from the sales goes to Housing Works to provide housing, healthcare, job training, and advocacy for New Yorkers living with HIV/AIDS. The Bookstore Café is an independent cultural center which offers patrons a unique opportunity by fighting homelessness and AIDS by a simple purchase or donation of books, eating at the café, attending in-store concerts, readings, and special events or by volunteering on their staff.
What could be a better collaborative project that does real good for its community? You don’t only discover a local business and find a rare gem of a book but support in the good fight. Lost Weekend NYC and Housing Works make reading one good book more than FUN-damental.
