Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art Announces Largest Gift in US History For LGBT ArtGifts in excess of $10 Million

The newly announced Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art has received major gifts in excess of $10 million. This constitutes the largest donation ever received by any LGBT arts organization. A gift of $8.8M was made by Charles W. Leslie in memory of his long-time partner Fredric D. (Fritz) Lohman. Substantial ongoing distributions from this gift, which consists of stock in a New York real estate corporation, will support the Museum. This is joined by other substantial donations including $1.5 million dollars from the Estate of Marion Pinto, an artist and long-time friend and supporter of Leslie-Lohman. Jonathan D. Katz, President of the Leslie Lohman Museum’s Board of Directors remarked, “Charles Leslie is one of the few individuals in New York with both the capacity, and the political will, to rectify the silence around gay/lesbian art and artists in New York’s major museums, by setting up our own gay and lesbian art museum. We’re excited to be presenting exhibitions that finally acknowledge important artists like Paul Thek fully in the round, and this major gift will enable us to continue to exhibit high quality shows for a long time to come.”

The Piers: Art and Sex along the New York Waterfront

The first museum exhibition focusing exclusively on the uses of the Hudson River docks by artists and a newly emerging gay subculture. The Piers explores how the gay liberation movement–spurred by the 1969 Stonewall Riots–transformed the cultural and social landscape of New York. Including major works by Gordon Matta-Clark, David Wojnarowicz and Vito Acconci, along with a number of significant photographers of the piers, the exhibition underscores how this neglected underbelly of New York gave birth to the East Village Art scene.

The Pop-Up Museum of Queer History is a grassroots organization that transforms spaces into temporary installations dedicated to celebrating the rich, long, and largely unknown histories of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people. Featuring visual art that excavated often repressed queer history, the PM is an example of a community based, dissident social history. 

Del Grace Volcano: A Mid-Career Retrospective

The first major US museum exhibition of Del Grace Volcano, a genderqueer visual artist, cultural producer and pioneer of queer photography. Although Volcano has exhibited widely in international venues, including the Gallery of Modern Art, UK, the Ludwig Museum, Germany, and the Victoria & Albert Museum, UK., the work is little seen in the US, where Volcano was born. This is Volcano’s first full scale mid career retrospective.
