Galerie Protégé is pleased to present Color Diary, a solo exhibition of the work of painter Paul Thomas.

Thomas conceives abstract works on canvas and paper with a primary interest in exploring the relationship between color, form and spatial differentiation. Using thin washes of acrylic pigments against white ground, the artist renders compositions reminiscent of flowing, translucent fabrics of many brilliant colors that capture and refract light. Using contrasting hues of warm and cool along with highly fluid system of mark-making, Thomas creates works seemingly suffused in radiant light. Unabashedly beautiful in appearance, Thomas’ work is a celebration of the full chromatic expanse and a visual meditation on the pictorial handling of space and color.

Thomas has stated that his interest in non-representational imagery is due to his concern with bringing about reactions of pure emotion in his audience, devoid of cultural references and cues. Both gentle and resonant, the works draw the viewer into the world of their internal play and irresolute meanings. Thomas has established an organic yet sophisticated system of surface dynamics combined with highly nuanced spatial ambiguities and lush color harmonies within his work that evoke a sense of transient, almost atmospheric, compositional structure.

MISSION STATEMENT

Galerie Protégé exists as a platform for emerging and non-represented artists to exhibit their work in the heart of New York City’s Chelsea gallery district. Located on the lower level of Chelsea Frames, an established conservation framing studio, Galerie Protégé is dedicated to exhibiting contemporary works of art in a wide range of media including but not limited to painting, drawing, photography and performance-based work.

Founded in the spring of 2011 by Jaclyn Acker and Debra Kowalski, Galerie Protégé was born of a mutual desire to offer emerging and non-represented artists an opportunity to make their mark on the New York City art world — an opportunity that was similarly extended to them by their friend and mentor Daniel Beauchemin who helped them find their niche in the big city.

Color Diary was organized and curated by Jaclyn Acker and Debra Lee Kowalski with graphic design by Andy Fligel.

Very special thanks to Lucas Natali.
