Michelle Doll: A Shelter to Call Her Own
Dare to dream in a sultry world where the earthy browns and glacial bluish grays ground the very ethereal and vulnerable humanity of the feminine form. BLANK SPACE gave a selected number of Michelle Doll’s paintings a home in their gallery with a solo exhibition entitled “Shelter” and an opening reception last February 16, 2012.
Doll uses herself as the model for most of her artworks. It plays contextually and methodologically using the juxtaposed elements of protection and vulnerability. The feminine forms are rendered with soul and shows off her skill as a figurative painter. In context, she recognizes that humans, when feeling exposed, rely on both external and internal forces to feel safe. The methodology part comes in when you see the intentional but scrupulous physical mistakes, which expresses the vulnerability in her work.
You can easily see that her works are very layered. Every seasoned artist needs to work their surfaces by special means of preparation. Doll paints her surfaces (e.g., canvas or mylar) then intentionally scrapes parts of it, or simply obscures it by wiping sections away. Having this process makes Doll’s works imbued with the almost dream-like transient state – a moment fleeting in time but locked forever on the scene of her canvas. It will keep you engaged and to be drawn closer where you’ll find a safe harbor of your own secret fears and dreams.
Michelle Doll has been exhibited and featured in varied locations: New York, St. Barth’s (French West Indies), San Francisco, Basel (Switzerland) and London (UK). Her formal education includes a BFA from Kent State University and MFA from New York Academy of Art where she graduated Cum Laude on both.
