For the fresh and still hungry when it comes to art, the gritty bosom of the Lower East Side (LES) makes it the nesting ground for emerging artists. A very surprising gem of a gallery on Attorney Street bisecting Stanton, here sits number thirty-five that hosted an opening for a group show entitled “Subliminal Sunlight” last January 7th.
Cindy Rucker, the gallery’s director, has been gracing this secret pocket of the LES with her featured take on what’s upcoming in contemporary art. Curator Howard Hurst gathered local artists from Brooklyn and the Bronx for this very vibrant collection of work that pierces a joyful burst of sunshine amidst a wintry atmosphere.
The artists included in the show are: Hisham Akira Baroocha, Morgan Blair, Maya Hayuk, Mark Warren Jacques, and Chris Mendoza.
Hisham Akira Baroocha’s symbolic and patterned Mandala inspired work as a site-specific art piece delves into elements, mystical energies, etc. Maya Hayuk’s plush organic shapes, which surrounds a prismatic painted pillar is a bold installation. Morgan Blair’s series of brick shaped renditions are very jewel-like and open ended for viewers to formulate their own interpretation. Chris Mendoza’s prism cut collage brims with explosive precision. Mark Warren Jacque’s also had a play on the color prism refraction on his circular forms that makes it a spurious study of unbridled kinetic energy.
What can the common thread be with the artworks chosen for this show? Every work is sublime as evidently propelled by their specific color palette. They are all strong and indeed a jolt of something alive and energetic like the rays of sunlight that foster imminent growth. As the winter season goes on, it’s heartwarming to have a source of light deep in the gritty bosom of the LES.
