Lyons Weir Gallery has a star on their stable. Jazz-minh Moore was a contestant on Season 2 of Bravo’s reality TV show “Work of Art: The Next Great Artist” and the opening reception held last January 5th could be considered as poetic justice after being eliminated from the show. In her own words, the artist is glad that she did not win and able to concentrate on making it in the real art world.
Moore’s latest series features a dilapidated cabin where her sister, Asia Kindred, is placed amidst the ruins of the structure. The cabin depicted was the first structure built on the land and deep in the woods of Oregon where Moore grew up. Watching the structure deteriorate into a nest-like geometry, she considers the detritus of time as something beautiful to capture.
The figurative clashed against an abstract background benefits from the use of the wood grain rendered in the pieces. They serve as landscapes to influence her compositions. Some surfaces are finished with high gloss resin while others are left bare. The surface treatment deliberately plays a textural study and reflective of the subject matter within each work.
As much of the fuss is made that she is attached to the reality TV world, it is proof positive that one can transcend their 15 minutes of fame. Jazz-minh has chosen to prove herself in the gallery district of Chelsea and not rely on her reality TV connections. The show served its purpose as it’s a vehicle for anyone to be in the public strata but if you can prove yourself successful outside that realm – then that’s not all there is.
